The Rook Van Winkle Blog is currently inactive (and has been since August 2008) due to my chronic health problems. I hope to return someday as I will always have an interest in chess. In the meantime, you may perhaps still find items of interest - especially if you are a middle-aged (or older) beginner or novice chess player...
Chess: The cerebral frontier. These are the voyages of the patzer, Rook Van Winkle. His never ending mission to explore the strange world of chess, to seek out new tactics and odd openings, to boldly move where no pawn or piece has gone before...
You can e-mail Rook at RookVanWinkle[at]hotmail[dot]com. Note that you'll need to translate that e-mail address into its correct form in order for it to work.
Boylston Chess Club Weblog is "Chess Blog Central." From here you can find all the best chess blogs - and lot's of great posts that are very entertaining and informative (and often very witty and amusing).
Greg's Chess Progress - like me, another middle-aged chess player returning to the game after years away from it - and seeking to improve.
Hello, my real name is James. I live in Southeast Michigan with my pet whippet puppy. She’s not really a puppy anymore but that’s the way I think of her. :-)
I am a former “information analyst” and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.

Taking up chess again and creating this blog is actually a form of therapy for me in order to halt, or better yet reverse, a serious decline in my cognitive abilities. You know - certain essential skills like thinking, learning, concentrating, reasoning, and remembering, etc. The medical advice I have been given is “use it or lose it.”
Good advice. But it was only in just the last couple months that it dawned on me that chess is just the right prescription!
I hope you agree, and that you will enjoy this blog...
